Congratulations, Corey!
Corey Garyn successfully defended his PhD thesis, "Mechanisms involved in the renewal and expansion of hematopoietic stem cells" on May 3rd, 2023. In Hans-Willem Snoeck's lab, Corey identified DNA damage and replication stress as a driver of direct megakaryopoiesis from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) both in vivo and in vitro. He also identified this mechanism as a major barrier to HSC culturing, and employed thymidine supplementation to avoid this pathway in culture.
